The First 10 Minutes Matter

@janeiroblackmon • Apr 24, 2026

The hardest part is usually the first 10 minutes.

Not the work itself.

Just starting.

Sitting down.
Opening the laptop.
Focusing on one thing for a full 10 minutes.

That’s where most of the resistance is.

It’s not that the work is too hard.

It’s that you haven’t locked in yet.

So your mind fills in the gaps.

You think about everything else you could be doing.

You question whether it’s the right time.

You tell yourself you’ll do it later.

But once you get started…

Something shifts.

You get into it.
You find your rhythm.
You lock in.

What felt heavy starts to feel manageable.

Sometimes even enjoyable.

And it’s almost frustrating when you think about it.

Because the thing you avoided…

Wasn’t that bad.

It just needed a beginning.

I’ve noticed this in everything.

Work.
Working out.
Making music.
Writing.
Even the small things.

The resistance is almost always front-loaded.

Not in the middle.

Not at the end.

Right at the start.

So lately, I’ve been thinking about it differently.

I don’t need to feel ready.

I just need to start.

Most people say give it 5 minutes.

And that works.

But the goal of 5 is to get to 10.

Because 10 minutes feels different.

It’s more intentional.

And more often than not…

10 minutes turns into 30.

30 turns into momentum.

And momentum does the rest.
